Summer is just around the corner and with the balmy Hawke’s Bay weather, out come the BBQs. Fire. Glowing coals. Thin blue smoke. Low & slow. Hot & fast.

If you love meat, you do not want to miss the inaugural celebration of all things BBQ, right in the heart of Napier City, under the Harris Stand at McLean Park. There’ll be live demonstrations and expert advice from some of New Zealand’s greatest pitmasters, food from authentic BBQ vendors, BBQ supply stands, live music, tasty beverages and more.

Organisers Jim Poppelwell and Beth Elstone have pulled together this family friendly event to celebrate the BBQ culture of our hardcore pitmasters, and at the same time to introduce American charcoal and wood fired BBQ to the BBQ curious. The Urban BBQ Festival will equip attendees with the tools to take their BBQ to the next level.

The festival will kick off at 12noon and include two stages. The Demo Stage will feature live demonstrations on how to produce a helluva juicy brisket, succulent pork ribs and the perfect steak, along with tips and tricks learnt the hard way by our pitmasters after hours over the coals.

“We are incredibly lucky to have a strong BBQ culture here in The Bay, with some of the country’s most highly rated pitmasters living right here in Napier. Combine that with the quality ingredients we produce and we thought holding an event like this just had to be done.” says event organizer Jim.

There’ll be live music all day on the Music Stage, kicking off with folky tunes from the Folk Yeah Duo. Next up it’s rock covers from the talented Jack Knife Beat, followed by Hawke’s Bay blues legends Dusty Rhodes & the Bluesmobile. The craft bar will be serving up a range of tasty beverages, whilst craft beer appreciators will want to head straight to the IPA Tent.

“In a nutshell this is an afternoon where you can come out and learn about BBQ whilst enjoying a few cold ones with your friends, and sampling the very best Hawkes Bay has to offer when it comes to low and slow or hot and fast BBQ” says Beth.

To keep everybody entertained there’ll be axe throwing, a chilli eating competition, and an opportunity to show off the grandest beards in attendance. Any Movember mo growers will want to be in to win!

Jim suggests people “Bring a hearty appetite and a mean thirst, for knowledge of course, and by the end of the day you’ll leave full of BBQ food, BBQ know how, and with a fresh enthusiasm for getting your grill on.”
